Just in time for the holidays, ARC Theatre offers a jazz-infused rendition of Dickens' Christmas Carol. Set in turn-of-the-Century America, The Christmas Carol Rag is full of romance, redemption, and Ragtime tunes for a family-friendly theatre experience that may be enjoyed either live or online! The show runs live Nov. 26 - Dec. 5 at American River College Theatre, with streaming performances running Dec. 10-12.
In this musical take on the Dickens classic, the character Scrooge is a woman, and a cold-hearted sweatshop proprietor during the Ragtime era in New York City, circa 1911. Her story of redemption is still there, of course, but with added humor and a few surprising twists including a wise and wonderful, Yiddish-speaking Ghost of Christmas Past. Scrooge also encounters a Ghost of Christmas Present whose warm, gospel-infused rendition of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" truly opens her cynical eyes. Featuring Ragtime and jazz music by Victor Herbert and George M. Cohan, the show is full of lively numbers like “The Streets of New York” and “If I Were on Stage,” in addition to the more traditional "Deck the Halls" and "What Child is This." The production is directed by Sam Williams, with music direction by David Williams. The talented, diverse cast will be costumed by Gail Russell, whose design work was most recently seen in Capital Stage's production of Admissions.
Joyous, nostalgic, and moving, The Christmas Carol Rag is simply the perfect way to ring in the holiday season! Live performances will be at American River College Theatre, 4700, College Oak Drive, Sacramento. Masks and proof of vaccination or negative Covid test within 72 hours are required. Parking is free at the corner of College Oak and Myrtle. For live or online/digital tickets and more information, go to ARCTheatre.org, or email [email protected].
