The Beaux’ Stratagem, a wicked comedy written in 1707, follows the fortunes of two dissolute young rakes who have blown their fortunes, and hence journey to the English countryside to marry for money. They encounter a variety of obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French Count, a clever serving wench. The biggest obstacle to their scheme, however, is Love, who hilariously lies in wait for both.
